KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4.5 Quart Stand Mixer, White

Amazon.com Review

KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 250 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. The bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a bonus spatula and a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. --Betsy Danheim

  • 250-watt, 10-speed mixer with tilt-up head
  • 4-1/2-quart bowl holds dough for 2 loaves of bread
  • 3 handy accessories: flat beater, wire whip, and dough hook
  • Includes bonus spatula and guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes
  • Measures 13-8/9 by 8-2/3 by 14 inches; 1-year warranty

I finally decided to take the plunge and buy this item when the price dropped to $115 and shipped for free. "You cannot beat that deal, on this mixer!"

The mixer itself is HEAVY and not exactly something that you can easily take on and off the kitchen counter and store in any cabinet. Check out the dimensions and make sure you have room for it... or make room; like I've had to do.

When using the mixer you really don't need to even scrape the sides of the mixing bowl. Good thing... there's not much room to do it! The bowl and the mixing device (whisk, dough hook, and beater are all included) both lock easily into place and the instruction book is very straight forward and has several recipies for you to try.

Using this mixer makes me realize what I've been missing. It's got power, and with all of the available attachments it's versatile too. The design is superior and the price is right.

Bottom line: BUY THIS ONE!!!

It's built like a tank, could last forever and cost $119 (well it did when I wrote this in 2005). Other than a shovel or a hammer, I can't think of anything else this inexpensive I could pass on to my children. Sure, you could pay more to get this with a larger bowl or a designer color, but why bother?
Once you start using this mixer, you will wonder how you did without it. It makes an excellent gift for anyone who cooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very versatile appliance, June 15, 2005
This review is from: KitchenAid K45WSSWH Classic Series 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer with Spatula, White (Kitchen)
This is, without a doubt, one of the best things I have ever purchased in my whole life. The price is unbeatable. With the Amazon promotion code, was $114 and free shipping. You can't beat that. Now I see they are offering it for just 99 dollars!!! It's a no brainer! Was shipped and received on time, very well protected.
You need to have a space to put the mixer, since it's really heavy and not too easy to take on and off constantly. The instructions book is very clear. Once I had the mixer with me, I used it right away. The results have been more than satisfactory. The speeds work beautifully with any kind of mix, the three attachments are the most important to have, from my point of view. Maybe other useful attachment would be the pouring shield. Usually we use it to mix batches of cookies, cakes and pies. What's wonderful is the mixing bowl has a coating that allows al mixes to slip without scraping the bowl. Certainly the bowl could use a handle, but it's not really... Read more

    4.0 out of 5 stars Not 100% mixer friendly, March 22, 2010

This review is from: KitchenAid Best-Loved Recipes (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully illustrated and well done cookbook with many great recipes. However, many recipes are duplicated in the booklet that comes with the KitchenAid mixer and far too many are recipes that don't use a mixer at all. As a new KitchenAid customer, I was expecting far more ways to use my mixer in the cooking process. That being said, I don't think anyone would be unhappy with the book at this price.

I bought the KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer. It sat on my counter for a month, not being used. So I bought The KitchenAid Best Loved cookbook. This cookbook has pictures for nearly every recipe, and the recipes are explained well. However, parts of the book are beyond my cooking needs. For instance, the Appetizer section: recipes are for high-brow types, not down home South Georgia types like me. The Cakes, Cookies, Candies and Desserts are more my speed, as I am familiar with these goodies.(What Southern cook isn't?) Only about 5 of the entrees were useful for my needs, but they sure are useful! I liked only a couple of salads, and side dishes. So, I probably won't get my moneys worth from this book. Someone who entertains a lot, would do well to buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Food Processor, but accessories are too expensive, September 10, 2010
This review is from: KitchenAid KFP715 Food Processor, 7-Cup
I recently purchased the KitchenAid KFP715 and I've only used it a few times. No complaints so far - well built, very sturdy, and gets the job done.

However, when I ordered this model, I didn't realize that there was a KFP720 and KFP730 as well. The 720 and 730 are the same basic unit as the KFP715, but they come with additional accessories (both include the "mini-bowl" and a small blade, which is necessary for mincing garlic and chopping nuts - and the 730 adds a citrus press). You can buy these options separately, but the cost is outrageous. If you will be using this to chop small items like garlic or nuts, go for the KFP720. The citrus press probably isn't required in as many kitchens, but go for the KFP730 if you want to get this option included.

This review is from: KitchenAid KFP715 Food Processor, 7-Cup
I searched all over my town for a decent food processor. Most were too big or too small. I saw the KitchenAid 7 cup Food Processor but it was "out of stock" at the Target I was at and they didn't know when it might come in. Went directly to Amazon.com and found it for the same price and free shipping. How could I lose? It is an excellent food processor and the ease of cleaning is a real plus. It's slightly heavy but I attribute that to a powerful motor. Works like a dream.

This product was certainly worth the price I paid for it. It runs very quietly compared to other processors that I have owned. The slice & shred blades do a great job. I like the fact that it has a metal post for the blade unlike others that only have a plastic post and that was always the part that broke. Feel confident in purchasing this product, you will not be disappointed.
